May 19th marked the 23rd National Day for Helping the Disabled. That morning, the Open University of China (OUC) Xinjiang School for the Disabled was formally established and the opening ceremony for the first class of students was held. On May 28, 2013, leaders from the OUC and Riga City Council’s Education, Culture and Sports Department signed a cooperation agreement at Riga City Hall. The two sides also attended the unveiling of the first Chinese distance learning center in the Baltic region, of which they are co-founders. Riga City Executive Juris Radzevičs gave a speech at the ceremony.
 
On May 10, 2013, the Open University of China (OUC) and Tianjin Radio and TV University (Tianjin RTVU) co-hosted a forum and signing ceremony for comprehensive strategic cooperation. The two parties signed an agreement in the spirit of sharing and mutual benefit, pledging comprehensive strategic cooperation in educational systems, talent cultivation, teaching construction and other areas.

In Xi'an on April 25, 2013, a 70-year-old woman and Xi'an RTVU Professor Hou Xinchang shook hands, overcome with emotion. With tears in his eyes, Hou said repeatedly, “It has been thirty years, and I really don’t know how to thank you!” What is the story behind their emotional reunion?

With the rapid development of online learning in China, online learning practitioners are having to acquire a wider range of skills and qualities. The Open University, UK (OUUK), a partner in the “Training for Online Learning Practitioners” project, sent Dr. Martin Smith to the Open University of China (OUC) for one month to help reform the project’s courses. Our reporter was honored to have the opportunity to interview Dr. Smith.

In the interest of developing community education and constructing a lifelong education system for all, on May 8, Leshan RTVU officially established a community education study center, organized family education learning activities in the newly built primary school, and issued more than 500 free learning cards to parents. 

A special edition of the OUC digital library for lifelong community learning in Wenzhou was officially launched on May 8, 2013. Deputy Party Secretary of the OUC Zhang Hui attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech.

In order to set a good example for young people and help foster positive ideals, the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League and the All-China Youth Federation have presented the 17th annual “China May 4 Youth Medal” to 27 members, and conferred nominations on five members. Two students from the radio and TV universities (RTVUs), Zhi Zhiyi and Chen Jianfa, were presented with the medal and received a nomination respectively.
