From 12-13 May, 2017, a working conference on the preparation of the OUC Council was held in Nanning, Guangxi Province. President of the OUC Yang Zhijian, responsible personnel from 43 units including the provincial RTVUs/Open Universities nationwide were invited to attend the conference.

On 31st July, 2012, the Open University of China (OUC) was officially inaugurated at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. Liu Yandong, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and state councillor, unveiled the OUC and delivered an important speech entitled Striving to Successfully Run an Open University with Chinese Characteristics.

From 6th February 1979 when China Central Radio and TV University (CCRTVU) was established to July 2012 when the Open University of China (OUC) was unveiled, the radio and TV universities (RTVUs) have grown larger and stronger, formulating a school network including the CCRTVU, 44 provincial-level RTVUs, 1,000 prefectural-level RTVUs, and nearly 2,000 county-level RTVUs. The number of active students has exceeded several million, the largest in the world.

In July 2012, the Open University of China (OUC) was unveiled at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

From April 8 to 10, 2016, the Chinese Language Centre of the Open University of China (OUC) kicked off its first session of 2016 professional competence training for international Chinese teaching instructors. The training gave full play to the advantages of distance open education, with the three-day courses all carried out online and offline simultaneously. 32 teachers from a total of 11 domestic Radio and Television Universities (RTVUs) and other social institutions participated in the training.

On January 12, 2016, the Vice President of CDII, Wu Ge, led a seven-member team to visit the OUC and study distance education and online teaching at the OUC so as to learn from its experience in distance education and online teaching, with the goal of enhancing the education and training of discipline inspection and supervision cadres.

On December 31, 2015, the Open University of China (OUC) held a seminar on non-degree education at industry and corporate colleges. At the seminar, they held discussions on non-degree education work for industry schools and further clarified development ideas to explore a new model of cooperation and development. 

On November 26-27, 2015, more than one thousand delegates gathered to attend the 14th China International Distance Education Conference. The theme of the conference was "The Learning Revolution: Making Breakthroughs and Gaining Higher Ground".
