Qiu Weiming, a member of the Communist Party of China, is a professor and senior technician with a bachelor degree. He started teaching at Taizhou Radio and TV University (Taizhou RTVU) in September 2013, and now receives a special government allowance from the State Council, and belongs to the Ten-thousand Talents Programme in Zhejiang Province.

He has won many honours, including the National May Day Labour Medal, and has been named a Labour Model and Chief Technician in Zhejiang Province.

Qiu Weiming is responsible for eight courses, including Mechanical Drawing, Mechanical Manufacturing, Tolerance and Fits, Metallic Materials and Heat Treatment, and Mechanical Design. He has been a head teacher responsible for class management and tutoring of a full-time class, a class in open education (a collaboration between the university and an enterprise), and two junior-college degree programmes. His seriousness, care and responsibility as a head teacher make him popular with his students, who in turn are highly valued by employers.

I. Guiding Students by Presenting Himself as an Example

Ethics is the foundation of teaching. Qiu Weiming is proud of his hard work, and enjoys being creative. He takes cultivating talent as personal responsibility, and bases everything he does on his love of his students and dedication to his job. He is committed to doing his best and guiding students to success.

1.Love: A Key Element of Education

Qiu Weiming attaches great importance to the first lesson of each new semester, in which he expounds on topics such as "My Work and Life Experience", "Personal Development for Students in Mechanical and Electrical Majors", and "What Young People Can Do for the World", in order to give his students direction. His stories aim to guide them in realising their own values. He started in a technical secondary school, proceeded to obtain junior-college and undergraduate degrees, and through persistence, resilience and creativity ended up becoming a university teacher.

Believing that one should never give up on a student, Mr. Qiu takes the time to support those who are lagging in their studies. He is patient with them and helps them with the points they are uncertain of in order to build up their confidence and allow them to gain a sense of achievement. He also creates an inclusive environment, refusing to allow academically poor students to be labeled as such. In his classroom, students can direct their own learning, thinking and practices, and engage in cooperation and communication, stimulating their productivity and allowing them to realise their potential as students.

2. Starting from Student Needs

A person’s ethics are internal, but demonstrate themselves in action. Qiu Weiming is himself constantly learning, and is meticulous in his approach to teaching. He has made bold attempts at teaching innovation, at combining research with instruction, and at finding the best ways of conveying the most important and difficult points while keeping in mind the future employment needs of his students. Over his 16 years in the classroom he has become more and more focused on using practice to make learning easier and more interesting, and enhancing the efficiency of his teaching. By simulating a company’s R & D department, and assigning his students tasks related to it, he is able to show them how a technical director interacts with his or her technicians or trainees, including review of their work, and the abilities in mechanical drawing, process planning, and problem-solving companies will require of them.

3. Leading Education by Cultivating Innovative Thinking

He gives prominence to the leadership of skillful technicians, and in the Qiu Weiming Studio trains students based on employer needs, and encourages them to participate in innovation and entrepreneurship competitions in which he himself has won awards. His studio also serves as a research and development centre for technological innovation, a teacher-training centre, and an incubator of future master technicians.

II. Attaching Importance to Teaching Reform, Promoting Learner Services, and Helping Students Succeed

1.Emphasising Practice and Exploring Teaching Reform

Mr. Qiu stresses combining practice and theory, and his explorations of course reform have achieved fruitful results. He taught 8 courses, totaling nearly 3,000 class hours, between 2013 and 2020, and his Fundamentals of Engineering Drawing, Mechanical Drawing, and Mechanical Manufacturing classes have been particularly successful examples of reform.

In his classroom, he adopts a three-in-one teaching approach which integrates design, improvement, and simulation, emphasising the crucial role of engineering drawings. He also implements a "one-on-one" principle based on the characteristics of individual students, and stresses the importance of practice. He corrects homework through face-to-face communication with students, like a traditional master with his apprentices, so as to develop their individual abilities, and allows no one to leave class until his or her homework has been completed and evaluated, or the student has specified the location, size and concepts of drawings.

2. A Dedicated Teacher Helping Students Succeed

Qiu Weiming lives by his words in order to be an example to his students. He attaches great importance to their drawing abilities, and to emphasise the idea that all work is based on drawings, offers "one-on-one" guidance and on-site modification. In a unified examination of 30 of his students, 29 passed the first time, a rate of 96% that was historically high for students of that level. Through his continuous efforts to help students learn and to find a good jobs, as well as his commitment to moral education, and making good use of teaching materials, his students have realized that the purpose of learning is both to become adaptable and a decent person. He is friendly "Bro Qiu" to his students, and has been named "Favourite Teacher" at Taizhou RTVU for two consecutive years.

Through the financial support of his Master studio in Taizhou and Teacher studio in the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Education, he has purchased experimental equipment worth 300,000 yuan for the university and its students.

III. Relying on Teaching While Participating in Research

1.No Pain, No Gain

Since 2013, Qiu Weiming's teaching has received the top assessment for six consecutive years, while in 2013, eight patents with him as the first inventor were authorised in the name of Taizhou RTVU. Two of these were “a ball-crank processing method” and “a shaft-length detection method”, and two others were accepted by the China National Intellectual-property Administration. He has also published many high-quality papers as first author.

2. Many Patents and Honourary Titles

He has presided over 4 projects at Zhejiang RTVU and led 1 project for the Finance and Education Department in Zhejiang Province, besides participating in many other research projects run by the Zhejiang Provincial Education Department. He has led students to compete in the Internet-plus Entrepreneurship & Innovation Competition in Zhejiang, where they placed third, and the 1st Entrepreneurship & Innovation Competition for College Students in Taizhou, where they won one second and one third prize.

3. Steadfast in Teaching and Research

Shifting from a research-based teacher to one focusing on both research and teaching, Qiu Weiming transplanted his 16 years of work experience into the classroom, combining theory with practice and innovation. His areas of expertise have broadened into many areas, including research, operations, teaching, and training. Now he has a new goal, and hopes to help students and front-line workers become more innovative, and to contribute more skilled workers to the economic and social development of Taizhou.
