On the recent list of the 8th National Moral Models, Zhu Shijie, an outstanding alumnus of the Open University of China (OUC), and workshop supervisor at the Ningbo Beilun Third Container Terminal (part of the Zhejiang Seaport Group), was named a “Model of Professional Dedication”.

Zhu Shijie enrolled in the undergraduate Administration and Management programme at Ningbo Open University (Ningbo OU) in the autumn of 2010, and then as a Mechanical Design, Manufacturing and Automation undergraduate in the spring of 2018. He loves learning, and is a diligent researcher. He has been named an outstanding OUC graduate and Ningbo OU alumnus.

Every day, Zhu Shijie operates a huge 49-metre bridge crane, lifting containers accurately and efficiently, and since starting work in 1998 has been exploring operational improvements. Through his “Zhu Shijie bridge-crane operations” he set a world record by lifting 185 containers in an hour, and increased his annual handling capacity to 1 million containers.

His skills have also led to him participating in major marine-rescue operations. A cargo ship, the Christina, was damaged in a collision in 2005, and Zhu and his colleagues worked four days and nights on the crane to unload 1,735 containers. This year, a stack of containers on the Mediterranean Aries was knocked loose in a storm, leading to a 20-hour retrieval operation that he led.

At the beginning of 2020, Covid-19 caused a sharp decline in the numbers of containers in the Chuanshan port district of Ningbo Zhoushan port. With the state promoting recovery of work and production, Zhu Shijie encouraged his colleagues to work hard on innovation and research in order to enhance efficiency. Thanks to their efforts, a single shift continued to be able to process 20,000 standard containers, and simultaneous operation of 45 bridge cranes became possible for the first time.

Zhu Shijie is not only an example to his colleagues, but has also established the “Zhu Shijie Innovation Practical Training Centre”, which has trained over 1500 workers and 17 technical professionals, and developed over 30 innovative independent projects.

Over the 23 years that Zhu Shijie has been devoted to his work he has risen from the “ordinary operator” to the “craftsman” level. He has also been named a National Model Worker, National Moral Model and National “Capable Young Employee”, and been awarded a National May 1st Labour Medal and a “special allowance” by the State Council.
