The results of the “Top Ten People in the News for Chinese Undertakings for the Disabled 2016” were unveiled recently. Rong Jing, a member of the China Wheelchair Fencing Team and an OUC student, achieved the most votes and successfully entered the selection.

The selection of the “Top Ten People in the News for Chinese Undertakings for the Disabled 2016” was jointly sponsored by the China Commission of Promotion of Publicity for the Undertakings of Chinese Disabled Persons and the China Internet News Centre. The activity consisted of two phases, online voting and final review. 20 candidates were selected from the online voting and entered the final review. The review panel of experts and media representatives then selected 10 candidates for the “Top Ten People in the News for Chinese Undertakings for the Disabled”.

Rong Jing’s unyielding spirit moved both the online voters and the experts. The review panel unanimously agreed that Rong Jing exhibited positive self-esteem and independence as a disabled person and that her actions had had a positive influence on the public and society.

Rong Jing was born to an ordinary family in Huachong Town, Shuyang County, Jiangsu Province in 1988. She is currently studying at Lianyungang RTVU, a branch of the Study Centre of the OUC School for the Disabled. She is handicapped in her right leg as a result of polio but she remains positive and optimistic towards life. In 2004, Rong Jin was selected by the Jiangsu Wheelchair Fencing Team. After years of painstaking training, she was selected to compete on behalf of the Chinese national team. Rong Jing fought hard and had won one honour after another for China. Rong Jin won three gold medals in female individual foil, epee team, and team foil respectively at the Rio Paralympic Games. In January 2017, Rong Jing was awarded the “Spirits of Sports for the Disabled” award at the 2016 CCTV Sports programme.
