Doctor Liu Yan is a professor of Beijing Normal University and a doctoral student supervisor. She is a member of the 11th and 12th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and a member of the CPPCC National Committee’s Committee of Education, Science, Culture, Health and Sports, a member of Pre-School Education Work Committee of the Ministry of Education, a member of the Expert Committee for National Teacher Education Course Resources of the Ministry of Education, a visiting professor of Hangzhou College of Pre-School Teacher Education of Zhejiang Normal University, a visiting professor of Xuzhou Kindergarten Teachers College, an editorial aboard of UK’s International Journal of Early Years Education, an editorial abroad of Australia’s International Research in Early Childhood Education, a member of the Academic Committee of China National Society of Early Childhood Education, and a part-time researcher of the Curriculum and Teaching Material Research Institute with People's Education Press. She has been dean of the Department of Preschool Education attached to Beijing Normal University’s School of Education for quite a few years, the first chairwoman of Children' s Games and Toys Professional Committee of China National Society of Early Childhood Education, a visiting scholar of Canada’s University of Toronto (the former Ontario Higher Education Research Institute), a Fulbright visiting scholar of USA’s University of Maryland, and an advisor of the compiling group of Guiding Principle for Pre-School Chinese Language Teaching commissioned by Singapore’s Ministry of Education.

Her work experience is as follows:

Since 1985, she has been engaged in pre-school education at Beijing Normal University as a lecturer, associate professor and professor.

From 1992—1995, deputy director of the Pre-school Education Office of the Department of Education with Beijing Normal University.

From 1995-2001, Director of Pre-school Education Office of the Department of Education with Beijing Normal University.

From 2001—2009, dean of the Department of Pre-school Education with the School of Education of Beijing Normal University.

The following is her overseas work experience:

From 1993-1994, visiting scholar at Canada’s University of Toronto (the former Ontario Higher Education Research Institute).

From 2005—2006, Fulbright visiting scholar at USA’s University of Maryland.

Her major research fields include basic theories of pre-school education, early childhood games and toys, childhood learning and guidance strategies, kindergarten education quality evaluation, and more. In the last decade, she has undertaken key projects under the Ministry of Education in the national education and science plan, and projects of the Ministry of Education’s humanities and social science research of China, and done in-depth and systematic research in the above fields. At present, she is undertaking the research Guarantee of Conditions to Include the First Year of Pre-School Education in the Compulsory Education, a key education project topic of the National Social Science Foundation.

She has published approximately 100 papers in national and international academic journals. Her representative works include: General Theory of Children’s Games, Didactics of Kindergarten Games, Principles of Pre-School Education, An Introduction to Early Childhood Education, Evaluation of Children’s Games, Contemporary Theory and Research on Children's Games, New Theory on Pre-School Education, Children·Games·Families, Experimental Teaching Materials for Kindergarten Curriculum, Early Childhood Activity Materials for Experimental Textbooks of Kindergarten Curriculum Reform in Shanxi Province, and more.
