Founded in 1987, the Asian Association of Open Universities Conference (AAOU) is a non-profit academic organisation for open and distance education institutions in Asia. As of October 2010, AAOU has 48 full members, 22 associate members and 2 individual members. The full membership is for dedicated open and distance learning institution located within the Asian continent and whose primary instructional delivery is through distance mode. The associate membership is for those who are active in promoting or delivering education by the distance mode. The AAOU has become one of the most influential open and distance education alliances in Asia.
Brief Introduction:
The International Council for Open and Distance Education (ICDE), formerly known as the International Council of Correspondence Education, was founded in 1938 and changed its name to ICDE in 1982. The ICDE established its permanent secretariat in Oslo, Norway in 1988 and now has over 190 institutional members from over 70 countries.
The Symposium on Open and Innovative Education, created by the Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK), aims to bring together scholars in the field of open and innovative education from all over the world to solve outstanding problems, exchange scientific research views, and explore cooperation methods.

The AAOU Staff Exchange Fellowship Programme was created by the Asian Association of Open Universities (AAOU). Member institutions of AAOU offer reciprocal short-term visiting fellowships to distance education professionals so they can carry out research projects connected with the promotion and development of distance education. The aim is to increase academic exchanges between Asian open universities and promote intercollegiate research cooperation.
