The Research Reports on the Development of Chinese Distance Higher Education series systematically summarises China's rich experience in the development of distance higher education over the past 30 years, in particular, after 1999.

Since 2013, the Open University of China (OUC) has made a coordinated effort to compile six research reports on the development of distance higher education in China, with former OUC president Yang Zhijian as editor-in-chief. The reports, published by the OUC Press, focus on descriptions of the current situation and the latest progress of Chinese distance higher education by analysing existing problems, predicting development trends, and exploring possible laws to be provided as reference for practitioners in the field. The release of the reports has had a widespread impact in the field of distance education and higher education in China and the reports are popular with practitioners of distance higher education. The reports have been listed among the National Key Publishing Planning Projects (Academic Books) in the 12th Five Year Plan and have been honoured with a second prize for Excellent Academic Works at the Fourth China University Press Book Awards and first prize at the Ninth National Excellent Scientific Research Achievements (Works) in Adult Education.
