On 10 January 2024, the Open University of China (OUC) conducted its year-end summary meeting for 2023. This meeting was guided by Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era and focused on completing key tasks within the framework of the "Six Major Projects".

The session included a comprehensive summary of achievements, an analysis of problems, and discussions about future planning. Wang Qiming, the Party Committee secretary and president of the OUC, chaired the meeting and gave a keynote speech. Department heads and Party branch leaders also reported on their achievements in Party-building and their respective areas of work.

The reports were closely aligned with the university's key tasks, focusing on the "Six Major Projects." They highlighted the active progress and achievements in implementing the guiding principles of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC). This included contributing to the construction of a learning-oriented society, supporting the national aging strategy, strengthening digital empowerment, implementing the fundamental task of fostering virtue through education, building an international "circle of friends," and ensuring full and rigorous Party self-governance. Leaders responsible for specific areas provided comments and remarks based on their respective duties.

Wang Qiming, representing the Party Committee of the university, expressed his sincere respect and heartfelt gratitude to all institutional units and departments for their diligent efforts throughout 2023. He emphasised that the year-end summary meeting is an opportunity to reflect on the work accomplished in 2023 and to plan for the year ahead in 2024. Each unit and department presented their 2023 achievements, highlighting key data, examples, experiences, reflections, and succinct summaries. The results were impressive, showcasing fruitful achievements and significant reform outcomes. All staff members have demonstrated strong political integrity and focused on development, prioritizing key areas in their performances. The accomplishments of the year are a testament to the hard work, perseverance, and collaborative spirit of the faculty and staff. Their efforts have exemplified the dedication, capability, and entrepreneurship of the OUC community, showing a commitment to taking responsibility, getting things done, and achieving remarkable successes.

Wang Qiming emphasised that this year marks a significant milestone: the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. It is also the inaugural year for developing a leading country in education, a pivotal year for achieving the goals set in the university's "14th Five-Year Plan," and the 45th anniversary of the university's establishment. He underscored the importance for all units and departments to adopt an international outlook and consensus, dedicate their efforts to national strategies, and fully leverage the role of the OUC. He stressed the need for a unified response to two key contemporary questions: our contribution to establishing a leading educational nation, and the interplay between open education and a learning-oriented society. The objective is to forge two main competitive strengths in open education: the development of digital resources and the application of digital technology. Our aim is to establish an OUC that is heartwarming, vibrant, inspiring, and influential.

The year-end summary meeting was conducted with a combination of both online and offline participation. University leaders, key officials from each Party branch and department, as well as representatives for democratic evaluations, attended the meeting in person. Meanwhile, other faculty and staff members joined the meeting by watching the live broadcast online.
