Recently, Professor Zheng Weimin, an academician from Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) was invited by the Open University of China (OUC) to record a course entitled The Basics of Computer Application to assist the OUC in the construction of its “gold courses”.

The OUC plans to invite famous experts from different industries to build its first batch of “gold courses”and facilitate the optimisation and upgrading of its courses and resources in order to implement its strategy of “improving quality and creating excellence and building a world-class open university,” as well as comprehensively enhancing its learner development quality. As one of the first academicians invited to assist in the “gold courses” construction, Professor Zheng Weimin started his instruction from the topic of AI, which is of great concern for students, and analysed the status quo and future competing tendency in the area of AI between China and US. He stressed that the key to enhancing innovation ability in AI lies in strengthening the AI hashrate. Professor Zheng described the framework of infrastructure of AI hashrate, as well as how to evaluate it. Professor Zheng’s instruction is closely in line with the OUC’s objectives for developing professionals in the Computer Science major. It has rich content and is highly targeted at the needs of learners. The lecture not only describes hot spots and cutting-edge technologies in the field of computer science, but also enriches students’ knowledge and inspires them to explore the unknown.

Following the lecture recording, a symposium was held between Professor Zheng Weimin and OUC personnel, including OUC Vice President Li Song and teachers from the OUC Faculty of Science and Engineering and relevant staff from the OUC Learning Resources Department. Li Song extended his appreciation to Professor Zheng for his help to the OUC over the past years.

The Faculty of Science and Engineering and the Learning Resources Department will continue to implement the requirement of the university’s Party Committee that the OUC should positively involve itself in and voluntarily serve the national strategy, closely combine its degree education courses with the national strategy, and actively carry forward cooperation with prestigious universities and research institutions to jointly build more high-quality courses and construct OUC “gold courses” in order to offer more high-quality learning resources for China’s lifelong learning system construction.
