The Learning Resources Department (Digital Library) of the Open University of China (OUC) is holding a series of symposiums to share its experience in course construction for the purposes of stimulating the construction of “Gold Courses” and enhancing the quality of learning resources construction.

The first session of the symposium was launched at the OUC’s Wukesong campus on 25 November 2021. The symposium invited Zhang Tong, associate researcher of the OUC Learning Resources Department; Zhou Wanyue, director of the Audio-Visual Business Department of OUC Publishing & Media Group; and Dr Wang Yu from the OUC Faculty of Education, to share their experience from the perspectives of the visualisation of learning resources, the construction of ‘OUC Open Forum’ programmes, and the diversified presentation and design of teaching videos, respectively. Teachers from OUC teaching departments and administration departments attended the symposium and took part in discussions.

Zhang Tong presented her experience in a speech entitled “Analysis of learning resources visualisation: An example of OUC video learning resources.” Ms Zhang reviewed the history of the construction and development of OUC video learning resources from the perspective of the OUC’s school-running characteristics. She used a large number of vivid case studies of the design and production of the OUC video learning resources to introduce the characteristics and classification of video resources for teaching purposes and share her experience in the selection of content, teaching strategy and methods, and the presentation of the visual effects of learning resources.

Zhou Wanyue shared her experience in a speech entitled “Sharing experience in the construction of ‘OUC Open Forum’ programmes.” She gave examples of video lectures from the OUC Open Forum, discussed topic selection and planning, media design, and quality management, and described how the OUC Open Forum programmes have gradually developed their own style as OUC open classes and established a brand for OUC quality courses over the past ten years.

Dr Wang Yu shared his experience in a speech entitled “The diversified presentation and design of teaching videos.” He used different styles of teaching videos from China and foreign countries to introduce video presentation methods, including instruction-based videos, operation/situation-based videos, and videos with a lot of different characters and scenes. Dr Wang Yu also explained the characteristics of each type of video, how to shoot scenes, and how to use different production technologies. He then summed up his experience in the production of MOOC videos and the selection of their forms, as well as some representative research results.

The symposium expanded the horizons of teachers in terms of  designing course learning resources from the aspects of topic selection, project approval, design and production. It will be beneficial to their future work.
