The Open University of China (OUC) held a seminar on Economics and Management teaching in Beijing on 18 November 2021.

The seminar, which had the theme of “Collaboration and creating excellence, cultivating talent with high-quality education,” aimed to comprehensively summarise experiences, widely gather consensus, make joint efforts to implement the fundamental task of fostering virtue through education, and promote the high-quality teaching of Economics and Management majors. OUC vice president Fan Xianrui attended the seminar and made a speech.

Fan Xianrui said that the seminar, coinciding with an upsurge of learning the guiding principles of the 6th Plenary Session of the 19th CPC Central Committee, is of special significance. It is a useful practice to thoroughly implement the spirit of the 6th Plenary Session of the 19th CPC Central Committee and promote related work. In Fan’s opinion, in recent years, teachers from Economics and Management majors have remained committed to the original intention of fostering virtue through education, taken active measures, and competed bravely for excellence on their way to promoting reform and development. They have been devoted to online education, demonstrated their responsibilities in teaching and education, and continuously improved the satisfaction rate and reputation of Economics and Management education. She hopes that by summarising up the achievements and experiences of the teaching work of Economics and Management majors, the faculty will be able to discuss how to implement the key tasks of the OUC Comprehensive Reform Plan, serve the “three-step” development strategy, fight a battle for quality, and promote the construction of a world-class open university in a problem, objective and results-oriented manner. She pointed out that in order to start a new journey of high-quality development, we should remain true to our original intention, bravely undertake the mission of education, and confidently open a new chapter in teaching in Economics and Management majors. To do that, firstly, we need to put people first, maintain a student-centric principle, and constantly improve our awareness of service and measures to implement service. We should develop education for students and continuous serve them during the educational process so they can benefit from educational achievements. Secondly, we need to value quality, build our strengths through quality improvement, constantly deepen teaching reform, and effectively improve education quality. We should make great efforts in the construction of majors, teaching processes, and teachers. Thirdly, we must adhere to fostering virtue through education, successfully conduct curriculum-based ideological and political education, and strengthen the effectiveness of education. We must carefully improve our own political literacy and focus on strengthening curriculum-based ideological and political education.

Liu Zhifang, vice dean of the Faculty of Economics and Management, comprehensively summarised the progress made by the faculty over the past two years in terms of the construction of majors, courses, teaching processes, and services, as well as scientific research, based on the work review, teaching progress, current situation and problems, and future work arrangements of the faculty. She also made plans for future work.

During the seminar, Professor Feng Lin from Dalian University of Technology shared his valuable experiences of and suggestions for the successful application for online quality courses in a speech entitled “The construction and application of online first-class courses.” He also discussed the change of the term of office of the Central Teaching and Research Groups of six majors, including Accounting and Business Administration, as well as the first ideological and political education teaching design competition in the Economics and Management majors. The winner of the competition were invited to engage in special exchanges and give a lecture on curriculum-based ideological and political education, which demonstrated the style of teachers engaged in Economics and Management.

Liu Zhimin, dean of Faculty of Economics and Management, said that this seminar not only summarised the teaching results of Economics and Management majors, but also enabled exchanges about the ideological and political education construction of online courses. It is a seminar on teaching during the 14th Five-Year Plan. Through exchange and discussion, the participants agreed that the seminar was flexible in format, rich in content, and fruitful in results. They promised that, in the future, they would take the opportunity of in-depth study and implementation of the guiding principles of the 6th Plenary Session of the 19th CPC Central Committee and set an aim for high-quality education. They would sum up their experiences, work hard, and move forward bravely. They would also deeply implement the fundamental task of building morality, cultivating talents, and make concerted efforts to promote the teaching work of Economics and Management majors to create excellence and improve quality.

The seminar attracted a total of more than 600 participants watching on-site and via live video.
