Tang Yingshan, a 1990 graduate of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, has taught Art at the Open University of China (OUC) for 30 years, mainly online, with his areas including sketching, oil painting, and other skills.

Over the years, he has helped construct the basic Arts curricula and online Art major, while researching methods of teaching art online. He has received seven awards at or above the provincial and ministerial levels, including one in the "16th Famous-teacher Awards for Institutions of Higher Learning in Beijing". He has also served as a national-project leader, written 6 textbooks, and published 15 audio-visual textbooks and 4 sets of CAI courseware.

With his love of education, upright character, professionalism, and teaching ability, he has been committed to online art education for decades, taking on arduous tasks, and making outstanding contributions to teaching, research, and management.

  1. He played a pioneering role in the construction of the Advertising Design major.

In 2005, the China Central Radio and TV University launched research and preparations for establishing the Advertising Design major and helping meet the needs of national economic development. Tang Yingshan was a major participant, relying on his online-teaching experience to act as liaison between the university and teachers from the Communication University of China, Central Academy of Fine Arts, and other well-known academic institutions in order to deliver high-quality courses, and allow China's first online art major, Advertising Design and Production, to open in 2006. In 2009, after two years of investigation and demonstration, Tang Yingshan led a team of young teachers in transforming an engineering-based major, Interior Design Technology, into that of Interior Art Design, enabling it not only to survive but gain an annual enrolment of more than 1,000 students.

  1. He has takenon heavy responsibilities in course construction.

Tang Yingshan focused on student needs in constructing courses for the new major, with his video course, "Field Sketching," winning particular praise from students, and vindicating his approach to teaching and course design.

In 2017, he organised an update of the Sketching course that replaced its textbooks and videos to cover both sketching and design, with the high quality of these updates leading to them being used in Advertising Design and Production, Interior Art Design, Animation, Digital Media, and other majors. Over 2,000 students sign up for this course every year.

In addition, Tang Yingshan builds open curriculum resources to meet changing needs. His video and online lectures include "Lectures on Art Basics - Sketching", "Sketching", and "Oil Painting", and as courses addressed to both university students and the general public, these have received around a million views.

  1. Hisachievements include both teaching and research.

Tang Yingshan attaches importance to research, and has published 7 papers in core journals, and participated in many international conferences. In his view, four elements (curriculum design, support services, technical environment, and learner evaluation) need attention in the construction of online art courses.

Tang Yingshan is also involved in popularising academic achievements and training young teachers, organising the latter into research groups and guiding them in their projects and publications. Every year, he gives about 10 speeches at OUC branches and colleges and universities outside the system; he includes young teachers from the branches in his course-construction groups, and has established a WeChat group for teachers in the major at the OUC. Finally, he has established a teaching- and research-centre group for Art Design majors in the OUC system, and holds week-long seminars for its teachers.
