On 4 March 2021, Tianjin Open University (Tianjin OU) provided a public-welfare service, part of a series of activities called “Community Volunteer to Help Seniors Use Mobile Phones”, at the Bigui Garden Community Centre in Jinan District. On the occasion of Lei Feng Memorial Day, volunteers from the Community Education Guidance Centre and the Open University for Older Adults channeled the spirit of Lei Feng to help seniors cross the "digital divide".

To help them in this way, the Open University for Older Adults brought the classroom into the community, with teachers and volunteers giving seniors assistance there. In addition, the university distributed Tianjin community-education materials titled "Smart Living for Citizens".

Guidance focused on the use of the health code (a Covid-19 contact-tracing app), registration for medical services, ride hailing, food delivery, online shopping, and other functions of interest to seniors.

Following the publication of the "Smart Living with Technology" series in 2017, the university published the "Photography for the Elderly" series in 2020, and developed a series of video courses, "Master Mobile-phone Use with Me”, also designed for senior citizens.
