Li Suhuan was a student in the 2015 Rural Enterprise Management class at the Qingyuan campus of Baoding Radio and TV University, Hebei Open University, and a deputy to the 13th National People’s Congress.

She was named a “National Labour Role Model” in 2020 and “National Female Role Model with Outstanding Achievements”in 2021.

As a deputy to the National People’s Congress and leader of the Li Suhuan Fruit and Vegetable Cooperative in Nanwang Village, Qingyuan District, Baoding City, Li Suhuan has dedicated herself to promoting rural revitalisation.

At the 2021 Two Sessions, Li stated to the Congress, “Agriculture facilities are useful in our village. For example, we use a battery facility to scatter hailstones in extremely bad weather. I propose the Congress fund construction of facilities for preventing or alleviating disaster.”

In February 2021, the watermelon fields in Nanwang Village were lined with vast stretches of greenhouses where watermelon seedlings were thriving. Li was checking their growth, and she said that because of the rebound of Covid-19 in January this year she had to give the farmers technical guidance over WeChat, and that this made her decided to make the proposal mentioned.

Due to the unique advantages of its soil, Nanwang Village has a long history of watermelon cultivation, and is the largest centre for organic watermelons, melons and vegetables in north China. Farmers who used to work individual holdings now belong to the cooperative, and with Li Suhuan as its leader, facilities have been built to extend the growing season and enhance the village’s prosperity.

“Shaking off poverty is not the finish line, but the starting point of a new life and new endeavour.” Li was deeply inspired by President Xi Jinping’s remarks at the grand gathering held to mark the country’s poverty-alleviation accomplishments. “As a rural–cooperative leader, I really hope President Xi will come to visit our watermelon farm one day, to see how the village has been transformed, and to assess the lives of its residents.”
