The week from 14-20 September 2020 saw a national-level publicity campaign promoting network security. As an active response to the event, the Open University of China (OUC) held its own network security week on the theme of "Protecting Network Security for the People and by Relying on the People.

” The aims of the event were to thoroughly implement the important thoughts of general secretary Xi Jinping on the construction of an Internet Power, especially the important instructions of the “four adherences,” build a network security system for the university, popularise knowledge of network security among all staff, and enhance awareness of network security protection. The event was jointly organised by the OUC Office of the Leading Group for Network Security and Informatisation and the Office of the Party Committee and President.

The guiding ideology of the event was to thoroughly study and implement the important thoughts of general secretary Xi Jinping on the construction of an Internet Power and publicise the great achievements made by the party in the work of national network security. It also aimed to disseminate and implement the “Network Security Law” and related supporting laws and regulations, spread network security knowledge, and create a clear network environment, while jointly safeguarding national network security.

During the publicity week, all members of the OUC downloaded and studied the Collections of General Secretary Xi Jinping's Important Expositions on Network Security through the OA system. The collected works contain seven important speeches and instructions given by general secretary Xi Jinping on network security and information technology from 27 February 2014 to 17 September 2019.

On 15 September, the OUC held an online special lecture on network security. Zeng Dehua, deputy director of the Education Management Information Centre of the Ministry of Education and director of the Educational Information Classified Security Protection Evaluation Centre, was invited to give a report entitled “The Situation and Requirements of Network Information Security in Education.” About 500 faculty and staff from the OUC headquarters and its school running system attended the seminar. Zeng Dehua introduced the national network security strategy, policies, and regulations, and gave an in-depth explanation of the educational network security system and mechanism, policies, and requirements for education network security. He also demonstrated some network attack and protection cases. Finally, he put forward suggestions for network security to be implemented by the staff of the OUC, including strengthening the implementation of a network security responsibility system, improving the technical protection of the network security, implementing a network classified security protection system, strengthening network security education and training, and enhancing network security operation and maintenance.

From 17 to 19 September, a large-scale news feature film, The Fifth Space, produced by the Media Convergence Centre of Shanghai Media Group was broadcast on the large screen in the hall on the first floor of the OUC’s Wukesong campus. The feature film was also uploaded to the OUC learning network for all faculty and staff to watch anytime, anywhere.

From 14 to 20 September, the “2020 Network Knowledge Q&A” event was opened for all OUC faculty and staff. The content of the Q&A session covered the Collections of General Secretary Xi Jinping's Important Expositions on Cybersecurity, general knowledge about network security, as well as network security errors that are hard to avoid in daily work.

Taking this activity as an opportunity, the OUC will continue to promote network security publicity activities, improve the network security literacy of its staff, and strengthen the network security protection of the university. It will speed up the establishment of a comprehensive network management system, guide staff in becoming more conscientious in their participation in the construction and safeguarding of internet security, and work together to do a good job in network security in the new era.
