Since early 2020, the COVID-19 epidemic has affected hundreds of millions of people. The Open University of China (OUC), supporting the guidance of the Ministry of Education (MOE) in terms of curbing virus transmission within the education system, put out a call for volunteers.

Wang Jia, a member of the evaluation section of the OUC’s Department of Quality Supervision, volunteered with the MOE office to combat the epidemic on 4 February, and was assigned to the group responsible for disseminating information. She has proven herself to be enthusiastic, devoted, professional and courageous.

Tackling the Crisis with Principle and Resolve

"A nation prospers only when its young people are ambitious and capable." Wang Jia has taken to heart the aspirations and mission of Chinese communism in helping to fight the epidemic. During the Spring Festival, when she learned that the OUC was recruiting young communist volunteers to participate in the work of the MOE to contain Covid-19, Wang Jia, the youngest member of the Party branch, communicated her eagerness to volunteer to her superiors, and gained their support. At first, her parents were very worried about the health risks, but were reconciled after she had explained her work to them and communicated her determination. She then flew to Beijing, and has now spent 153 consecutive days at her new task.

Fearless and Responsible

"Follow the infections and fight them until they are gone." The MOE has shouldered a heavy burden in dealing with the epidemic, and Wang Jia has become used to working overtime, on weekends and holidays, and to being always on standby. Not only that, but she faces a high risk of infection because she commutes by subway. In June, the Daxing and Fengtai districts she travels through were designated medium or high-risk, yet she persisted in her task.

Working with Dedication, Professionalism, Efficiency and Precision

Wang Jia is diligent, makes use of her expertise in statistics, cares about accuracy, and is constantly growing and learning as she deals with new situations and problems. Her strong writing and communication skills have also been helpful. She is a model for young OUC Party members seeking to make a difference in the current crisis.
