The review committee for the outstanding graduates of the Open University of China (OUC) recently reviewed the candidates for the "2014 Class of Outstanding Graduates of the OUC" and publicly announced the final list of award winners. 438 students were announced as part of the"2014 Class of Outstanding Graduates of the OUC".

44 open universities and RTVUs at the provincial level, along with the OUC Experimental School,  OUC Bayi School, OUC Zongcan School, OUC School for the Air Force, OUC School of Tibet, and OUC School for the Disabled participated in the selection process. The selected outstanding graduates are diligent in their study, and make full use of modern technology to carry out self-directed learning and produce excellent results. Among the students, some have been awarded the National May 1 Labor Medal, some are National Model Worker award winners, and some are National Advanced Security Officer award winners. Some have been honored at the provincial and ministerial level, and some have won awards from military regions. Some have obtained awards for national patents or provincial science and technology achievements. Many have published academic papers, and some have pursued further education in open universities or RTVUs after obtaining a Bachelor or Master degree. Their acts embody the pursuit of knowledge, which is part of the unique charm of open education.

Party Secretary of the OUC Li Ling stressed that the selection of outstanding graduates is of great significance for the OUC, and also an important part of learner support. He pointed out that students engaged in open education are mostly employed adults, and that they often face a conflict between work and study. Under these circumstances, they need to have strong willpower and great courage to complete their study. He said that the OUC should attach great importance to the selection process; fully explore and select outstanding graduates; select students to set an example and create a sound academic atmosphere; and improve the quality of the OUC’s learner development.

Vice President of the OUC Li Linshu pointed out that the importance of outstanding graduate selection is not limited to promoting the student work of the OUC; it is also important for the promotion of the overall construction of the OUC and the reform of its training model. He added that the focus for the next phase is to improve the current system in all respects and improve the systematic construction of student work, which also plays an important part in improving the OUC’s own systems.

The OUC will cover the OUC’s 2014 Class of outstanding graduates at http://dianda.china.com.cn, Newsletter of the OUC, Chinese TV News, and other media to demonstrate the role of the OUC’s students in the society.
