Guangzhou’s first “corporate college” has innovated a new mobile learning method, enabling employees to learn on their own. Students now have the opportunity to improve their professional and general capabilities via learning software installed on tablet computers.

On Mar. 11, 2016, ten corporate employees were commended for their outstanding academic performance through such learning method. Furthermore, the Guangzhou Federation of Trade Unions even offered subsidies for this new employee-oriented learning style.

Ju Xiaoping, an official responsible for the project, explained, “This is the first corporate college in Guangzhou which aims to help in-service employees further their studies.” Currently, many first-line workers have lower education degrees; quite a lot of them graduated from junior high, senior high, or secondary technical schools. Therefore, enterprises urgently need to improve employees’ technical capabilities. In such a context, a mobile teaching mode has been created through the joint efforts of the Open University of China (Guangzhou) and relevant enterprises.

Also revealed is that corporate employees enrolling in the programme will be given tablet computers with study programme apps. Employees are able to take courses in their spare time for up to two years. Learners who have passed examinations will be awarded graduation certificates equal to correspondence junior college or undergraduate programmes.

The corporate college is China’s first modern enterprise university. It was jointly founded by the Open University of China, Guangdong Federation of Trade Unions, Guangzhou Federation of Unions, and related enterprises. The college integrates learner development for degree programmes, vocational technical training, and post training. The creation of a corporate college provides a series of services for employees, such as programme consulting, enrollment, course learning, examinations, certificates, processing of governmental training subsidies, etc., so as to make it possible for employees to attend college without having to leave the production line or their post.
