Jiashan College of Zhejiang Radio and Television University (Zhejiang RTVU) recently opened enrollment for spring 2016 open education. Among registrants, one special person named Gu Weilin was honoured as the National Labor Model last year.

Gu Weilin is an RTVU graduate. In 2008, he came to study at Jiashan College under the "One College Student Per Village" programme and graduated with a junior college degree in June 2011. He now works at Dayun Management Station along the Shanghai-Hangzhou-Ningbo Expressway in Zhejiang province. Encouraged by him, more than ten of his team members in Zhejiang RTVU, as well as his wife and brother-in-law, chose to study at the RTVU.

"To diligently do one’s job and be an honest man" is Gu Weilin’s work and life philosophy. During his studies at Zhejiang RTVU, he maintained a strong thirst for knowledge, as well as outstanding student performance. At the toll-gate, a seemingly simple and tedious task, he has miraculously rung up over 45 million yuan with no errors. He also did a very impressive job in managing his team. The young team he led was honoured as "Toll Collector Stars" for five consecutive years. He has been promoted to a management position, and is even more pragmatic and hard-working than ever, vigorously promoting convivial and civilized service in his company, which has helped develop a project entitled, “Beautiful Jiashan.”

In light of his outstanding work, Gu Weilin was granted the honorary titles of Outstanding Talent in “Mass Innovation and Entrepreneurship” and “National Transportation System Model Worker” by the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC) of Zhejiang province in 2009. In 2011, he was selected as a "Pioneer and Excellent Worker Star with Dazzling Deeds and Words at a State-owned enterprise” by Zhejiang province’s SASAC. In April 2015, he was named a national labour model.

Gu Weilin’s response to these various honours is always modest and calm. He thanked Zhejiang RTVU for cultivating his personality and expressed that after stepping into a management position he truly felt it necessary to continue learning. So, he chose to return to the RTVU to pursue administration management studies in the undergraduate programme, so as to further enrich and improve himself.

As for why he chose an RTVU-based education once again, Gu Weilin stated, “I have a very busy job. Usually, I only have time in the evenings and at weekends. Learning during weekend classes through open education at the RTVU is most suitable for me.” In addition, the experience of studying in an RTVU left him with a very high esteem for the level of education and the tutors at the RTVU.

Studious students seeking knowledge like Gu Weilin have become a part of the beautiful scenery at Jiashan College. “In recent years, there were many employees with junior college diplomas or undergraduate degrees who chose to study at the RTVU, pursuing their first or second undergraduate degree in order to continue developing and seek better employment,” according to Wu Shuqiang, Vice President of Jiashan College.

Since its establishment thirty-seven years ago, Jiashan College of Zhejiang RTVU has always adhered to its orientation of serving rural areas, enterprises, and all sectors of society, implementing a multi-level, multi-type, multi-form system of open education, as well as an educational structural pattern with “open education as the main body, and distance and community education as two wings.” More than 16,300 secondary technical school and junior college graduates have entered society from Jiashan College, an open university for the Jiashan people, and more than 70,000 in-service employees and social workers have welcomed its cultural and technical training.

General Manager of Jiaxing Jiade Gardening Co. Ltd Chai Jinfu is one beneficiary of RTVU education. In 1998, Chai Jinfu took great confidence in investing about 100,000 yuan in a trial planting of flowers, including "Gerbera," "Bird of Paradise," and other types in Dayun. After continued expansion of the scale of planting, he founded Jiaxing Jiade Gardening Co. Ltd. However, due to a lack of business expertise and comprehensive theoretical knowledge, Chai Jinfu soon experienced difficulties in enterprise management. He enrolled himself in the township enterprise management specialty at Jiashan College in the spring of 2009 to “turbo charge” his career.

“Our teachers are all experts in the field of township enterprise management. I not only learnt theoretical knowledge from them, more importantly, I learnt their management experience, which can be directly applied to the management of my company.” Today, Chai Jinfu has cultivated several core employees at his enterprise using the knowledge learnt at Jiashan College of Zhejiang RTVU. Those core employees execute the enterprise’s daily management work.

Gu Weilin or Chai Jinfu, both outstanding RTVU students, have created wonderful work and life stories.
