To further study and implement the guiding principles of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (OUC), improve the teaching ability of teachers, and advance the ideological and political development of its courses, the Open University of China (OUC) recently held the final of the First Ideological and Political Teaching Skills Competition for Agroforestry and Medicine Programmes.

The event was jointly organised by the Faculty of Agroforestry and Medicine (Rural Revitalisation College), the Academic Affairs Department (MOE Vocational Education Steering Committee Office), and the Department of Student Affairs and Teacher Development.

Ju Chuanjin, vice president of the OUC, attended the competition and delivered a speech. He reiterated that the organisation of the First Ideological and Political Teaching Skills Competition for Agroforestry and Medicine Programmes represents the active adherence to the in-depth study and implementation of the guiding principles of the 20th National Congress of the CPC. He pointed out that it is necessary to develop a further understanding of the equal significance of the two dimensions of specialised knowledge education and ideological and political education, to further build consensus and improve awareness, and to integrate value building, knowledge impartment, and ability cultivation. The OUC will further strengthen the ideals and convictions to realise the complementation of disciplines and specialties, the reciprocal promotion of ideological and political skills, and the sharing of teaching achievements through the preparation, participation, and assessment of the competition. He hopes that teachers will further improve their political stance, demonstrate a deep understanding of the significance of cultivating talent for the Party and the country, implement the fundamental task of fostering virtue through education, provide support for high-quality development of open education, and put into practice the guiding principles of the 20th National Congress of the CPC with concrete actions.

A total of 23 contestants from the OUC headquarters and 14 branches participated in the competition online. The contestants were fully prepared, combining ideological and political elements with the teaching contents of the courses in a natural way. Everyone involved in the competition agreed that the ideological and political integration shown in the classes was spectacular. The contestants combined a class introduction, question and discussion sessions, modern information technology, practical training, class summary, and review and preview arrangement. The use of online-offline approaches effectively mobilised the classroom atmosphere.

About 730 people, including leaders, relevant teachers, and students from related branches and teaching management departments, participated in the competition online. Eight experts from Peking University, Capital Medical University, Beijing Normal University, Beijing Forestry University, Shandong University, Tianjin Foreign Studies University, and the sub-committee of Agroforestry and Medicine of the OUC Academic Committee assigned grades and commented on the contestants’ teaching designs and their lectures in the final. While recognising the significance of the competition for ideological and political course teaching skills and the fantastic performance of the teachers, they gave good opinions and suggestions.

All the related leaders and teachers in the OUC education system agreed that the competition was inspirational and worthy of demonstration and further promotion. It helped to build a better consensus, and the teachers of agroforestry and medicine disciplines in the system have improved their ideological and political education and teaching ability. The goal of promoting teaching, learning, improvement, and construction through the competition has been achieved. A good foundation has been laid for better education and teaching, as well as the high-quality development of open education in the future.
