8 June 2022 was the 14th World Oceans Day, and designated in China for promoting protection of the oceans. The Open University of China (OUC) and Qingdao Open University jointly invited Professor Wang Guangce, a researcher with the Institute of Oceanology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, to stream a lecture live on the OUC’s lifelong-education platform.

The Community Education Research and Training Centre of the Ministry of Education, as well as municipal and provincial community-education centres nationwide, arranged for community-education workers and residents to watch.

Professor Wang is an expert in marine ecology and protection, specifically the biology of seaweeds, and his lecture was rich and inspiring.

President Xi Jinping advocates building a maritime community with a shared future, building the “21st Century Maritime Silk Road”, contributing Chinese wisdom to the sustainable development of the oceans and their rule-based governance. This lecture was not only a response to this initiative but also, as part of the OUC’s “Lectures by 100 Famous Teachers”, intended to promote national lifelong learning.

Yue Guofeng, secretary of the Qingdao OU Party Committee, presided over the event, while onsite attendees included Li Hong, vice president of Qingdao OU, and faculty of its School of Marine Education. Other OUC faculty and staff watched the lecture via video link.
