HUO Liang, a member of the Communist Party of China, is a student in the Mechatronics Technology programme at the Open University of China and a recipient of the 2024 OUC Scholarship. He currently works as an assembly fitter and senior technician (deputy senior level) in the Assembly Plant of Qizhong Numerical Control Equipment Co., Ltd. His honours include the National May Day Labour Medal, the Heilongjiang Provincial May Day Labour Medal, Longjiang Artisan, Qizhong CNC Master Technician, and Qiqihar Model Worker.

For 22 years, HUO Liang has remained rooted at the frontline of heavy computer numerical control (CNC) machine tool assembly, having completed the assembly and commissioning of over 260 high-end CNC units. His first‑time pass rate for inspection has consistently remained at 100%, with zero customer complaints from the field. During his studies at the OUC, he closely linked classroom theory with on‑site challenges, writing seven technical case studies. Four of these case studies were adopted and promoted by his company, directly generating economic benefits of 3.8 million yuan. He has thus become a model example of “industry‑education integration”.

Diligent Learning and Steadfast Action: Building a Solid Foundation of Skills

HUO Liang has always maintained a diligent and inquisitive attitude, teaching himself mechanical, electrical and hydraulic knowledge. Aware of the importance of systematic learning, he enrolled in the Mechatronics Technology programme at the OUC in March 2023. He consistently adheres to the principle of “learning for application and applying to enhance learning”, promptly using what he learns in the classroom on the assembly floor. He focuses on accumulating production experience, and deeply integrates theoretical knowledge with his 20 years of frontline practical experience, making him gradually become a core backbone of the company's assembly team. He has successfully completed every task related to the production, installation and commissioning of the company's high‑precision, major equipment, proving his technical competence through his performance.

In 2012, he was responsible for installing China's first heavy CNC roll grinding machine, the RG300, for Luoyang Mining Group. This machine was a prototype product of a major national science and technology project, and its installation was extremely challenging. During the installation, he overcame numerous technical and production difficulties, enabling the machine to meet acceptance accuracy requirements ahead of schedule, with all machining accuracies passing. He made a significant contribution to bringing the machine into production early for the customer, earning high praise from them. Later, the product won the Second Prize of the Heilongjiang Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award and passed the national major special project inspection in the same year.

In 2013, HUO Liang stepped up to a critical task, undertaking the assembly of a special vehicle boring machine, model Q1‑190, for Chengdu Tianbao. This machine was later named one of the top ten independent innovation products in China's machine tool industry. In 2016, he led a team to install and commission an 8‑metre vertical lathe, model 2M83, for Shandong Haomai, finishing the work 14 days ahead of schedule and receiving high praise from the customer. Over the years, every machine tool installed by HUO Liang has enjoyed extremely high customer recognition, with robust product quality and few after‑sales issues, winning honour for his company.

Achieving Excellence Through Skills: Demonstrating the Essence of Craftsmanship

For two decades, HUO Liang has worked tirelessly on his ordinary post, diligently studying and striving for perfection, honing outstanding skills. In the workshop, he is a constant, busy presence. Whenever any machine encounters problems during assembly or commissioning, he proactively investigates to indentify the cause. Each year, he solves a large number of problems encountered during assembly, ensuring the smooth completion of the workshop's annual production tasks.

HUO Liang always thinks about the interests of his unit and his company. He understands that mentoring apprentices is not only about passing on skills, but also a necessary measure to raise the overall technical level of the enterprise, as well as his own responsibility and mission. Over his more than 20 years of work, he has mentored more than ten apprentices, six of whom have become skilled technicians and the rest have become workshop backbone personnel. In this way, the company has gained many technical core staff like him, who are willing, able and know how to work, providing a talent reserve for the company's sustainable development. As a company master technician, he also regularly conducts training on dedication and the spirit of craftsmanship by sharing his experience, having trained over 200 people in total.

Performing Duties Loyally: Fulfilling Responsibilities and Missions

For many years, HUO Liang has maintained his passion for work, fulfilling his duties conscientiously, working hard and continuously studying, completing all tasks with quality and quantity assured, achieving remarkable results and earning widespread praise from his leaders and colleagues. Faced with honours and achievements, he never becomes arrogant or complacent; instead, he continuously improves his overall qualities, creating extraordinary achievements in his ordinary post.
