In order to recognise outstanding women individuals, set examples for the others, and inspire women to cultivate self-respect, confidence, independence, and self-reliance, as well as to encourage them to forge ahead on a new journey and contribute to the new era by actively participating in the modernization of China, the All-China Women's Federation recently held a commemorative event for International Women's Day (March 8th) and an Awards Ceremony in Beijing.
A total of 15 students or graduates from the Open University of China (OUC) system were awarded the “National March 8th Red-Banner Holders”. Let us listen to the inspiring stories behind them.
ZHONG Tuanyu, a student enrolled in the Administrative Management (Rural Management) programme in the spring of 2022 at the Fu’an Open University (OU), Fujian Branch. She currently serves as Party Branch Secretary, Director of Village Committee, and Chairperson of the Village Women’s Federation of Jindouyang Village, Fu’an City, Fujian Province. She also holds the position of Part-time Vice Chairperson of the Fu’an Federation of Women.
ZHONG has fully applied the knowledge she has gained to rural development. Relying on the village’s long-standing martial arts and rich cultural heritage with ethnical characteristics, ZHONG leads the villagers of Jindouyang Village to upgrade and transform the buildings in the concentrated community of She (one of the ethnic groups in China). With an investment of more than RMB 18 million, they build a theme park of She ethnic martial arts, facilities for youth’s study and homestay, and an outdoor stargazing campsite. By inviting professional management teams, she has developed many unique tourism brands such as “Tourism + She Martial Arts Study” and “Tours to She Ethnic Village”, exploring a development path that integrates She ethnic culture with rural revitalisation. This enables Jindouyang’s She ethnic martial arts to step beyond the small village, and allows the intangible cultural heritage to shine with even greater allure.
