In order to recognise outstanding women individuals, set examples for the others, and inspire women to cultivate self-respect, confidence, independence, and self-reliance, as well as to encourage them to forge ahead on a new journey and contribute to the new era by actively participating in the modernization of China, the All-China Women's Federation recently held a commemorative event for International Women's Day (March 8th) and an Awards Ceremony in Beijing.

A total of 15 students or graduates from the Open University of China (OUC) system were awarded the “National March 8th Red-Banner Holders”. Let us listen to the inspiring stories behind them.

ZENG Daoqun, a graduate majoring in social work from Direct Division of Zigong Open University, Sichuan Branch, currently holds the positions of Party Branch Secretary and Director of Gaotan Village, Liantuo Town, Yantan District, Zigong City, Sichuan Province.

Since becoming a member of the village’s “dual committee” in 2011, ZENG has consistently focused on the well-being of the village children. Annually, she dedicated personal funds to support impoverished and left-behind children with gifts and financial aid. She established a care centre for left-behind children in the village and organised volunteer teaching and tutoring sessions in association with university students. Moreover, ZENG went to great lengths to support orphans from impoverished families, welcoming them into her own home to provide a family environment that helps fill the gaps in their childhood.

ZENG has innovated in promoting rural culture and strengthening primary-level governance by inviting exemplary figures to speak at farmers’ night schools and moral education sessions. She has also initiated awards like “Outstanding Party Member” and “Excellent Farmers’ Night School Student”, fostering a community-wide culture of good habits and positive social trends.
