In order to recognise outstanding women individuals, set examples for the others, and inspire women to cultivate self-respect, confidence, independence, and self-reliance, as well as to encourage them to forge ahead on a new journey and contribute to the new era by actively participating in the modernization of China, the All-China Women's Federation recently held a commemorative event for International Women's Day (March 8th) and an Awards Ceremony in Beijing.

A total of 15 students or graduates from the Open University of China (OUC) system were awarded the “National March 8th Red-Banner Holders”. Let us listen to the inspiring stories behind them.

YAO Huiwen, a student majoring in Social Work at Deqing College, Zhejiang Branch, currently serves as the head of the “Deqing Sisters” Mediation Studio in Deqing County, Zhejiang Province.

Faced with a variety of primary-level conflicts and disputes, YAO leads the “Deqing Sisters” team to find the subtle openings for emotional mediation within the bounds of law, scale, and warmth. She consistently devotes herself to resolving each dispute with fairness and impartiality. Together with her team, she strives to resolve each dispute using the most economical and convenient methods. The “Deqing Sisters” mediation brand, under her leadership, has been successfully selected as a landmark achievement of the Zhejiang “Fengqiao Experience” in the new era (a primary-level governance model that emphasises resolving conflicts locally through community participation, ensuring social stability with minimal arrests and enhancing public security). Their stories have been permanently exhibited in the “Fengqiao Experienc” Exhibition Hall of Zhejiang Province.

Over the past decade, YAO has innovatively established the "Deqing Sisters +” diversified dispute mediation service model, , deeply engaging in community volunteer activities to resolve conflicts at the frontline. Since engaging in people's mediation work, she has mediated nearly a thousand cases involving marital and family issues, women's and children's rights protection, and neighbourhood disputes, achieving a success rate of 97%. She conducts over 100 volunteer activities annually, such as women's rights protection and legal consultations, safeguarding the happiness of people's marriages and families with responsibility and warmth, promoting social harmony and civilisation, and showcasing the compassion and efficiency in serving the public.
