Recently, the results of the selection of outstanding alumni of the Open University of China (OUC) were announced, recognising 328 alumni from various industries across the country.
These individuals, with accomplishments as their foundation and technology as their wings, demonstrate resilience, confidence, and a pragmatic, enterprising spirit, writing a unique chapter of progress of the OUC people. From today on, the stories of some alumni will be selected for sharing. By reviewing their outstanding deeds and listening to their life insights, the OUC’s achievements in talent development over the last 45 years are highlighted.
Wu Xin, a senior accountant, studied Finance and Accounting majors at Qingdao Radio and Television University from 1983 to 1986. He currently serves as the Party secretary and chairman of Qingdao Haichuan Construction Group Co., Ltd. Wu Xin has been honoured with several accolades, including National Outstanding Construction Entrepreneur, Advanced Worker in Shandong's Construction System, Outstanding Communist Party Member in Shandong Province, Shandong Province's Labour Model, and Outstanding Entrepreneur of Qingdao City. He has also received the Shandong Province Labour Medal for enriching the people and revitalising Shandong.
Pioneering Ox: Embracing Innovation, Leading the Way, and Boldly Advancing
By the end of 1996, Wu Xin assumed the role of general manager at Qingdao Haichuan Construction Group Co., Ltd. Confronted with historical challenges, significant enterprise burdens, and fierce market competition, he fearlessly tackled difficulties and steered the company towards a new chapter of development.
In terms of management, Wu Xin was not afraid to experiment and pioneered a “group development” business model, leading to the completion of several high-profile projects. In 1997, the company achieved profitability. By 2000, it was providing and improving housing for nearly 200 staff members. Under Wu Xin's leadership, the company quickly embarked on a path of sustainable growth.
In operations, Wu Xin broke new ground by advocating for “business first” and “going global” strategies. He secured international operating rights for the company in 1999 and was the first to tap into the market in Jiamusi, Heilongjiang. His extensive travels across the country expanded the company's reach to over 20 provinces and cities in China. Additionally, he personally led teams to explore international markets in Africa and Central Asia. In 2000, his company successfully secured the Oran Medical College project in Algeria, marking a significant milestone in international project execution. The company has since actively participated in the Belt and Road Initiative, undertaking projects in more than ten countries.
In 2006, under Wu Xin's guidance, the parent company successfully transitioned from a state-owned to a private enterprise, significantly boosting its vitality. In 2017, he further facilitated the company's upgrade to a top-tier general contracting qualification.
Over his 28 years in leadership, Wu Xin has led the company to rapid growth and enhanced brand influence, with the company's output value increasing from 110 million yuan in 1996 to over ten billion yuan today, and its profit margins and scale growing nearly a hundredfold. The company has also earned recognition as a National Excellent Construction Enterprise, one of the Top 500 Chinese Construction Enterprises, one of the Top 200 Growing Construction Enterprises in China, one of the Top 30 Comprehensive Strength Construction Enterprises in Shandong Province, and one of Qingdao's Top 100 Enterprises.
Serving the People and Selfless Dedication
Wu Xin has always been passionate about social welfare, leading initiatives in impoverished areas such as Guizhou and Gansu, and actively fulfilling the company's social responsibilities. Beyond his personal involvement, Wu Xin has led the company in poverty alleviation and disaster relief efforts. Under his leadership, the company has donated over 15 million yuan in cash and goods, earning accolades such as the Hope Project Contribution Award, the Red Cross Silver Award for Love, one of the Top Ten Charitable Organisations in Qingdao, Civilised Unit in Qingdao, and Model Enterprise for Social Responsibility in Qingdao. These efforts have received widespread praises from society at large.
