Editor's note: In the battle with the COVID-19 epidemic, more and more fighters are coming to its front lines, including students and former students of the Open University of China (OUC). These words were in a letter by Wang Yun, a Social Work undergraduate in the Faculty of Culture and Law (autumn 2018) at the Tianjin Branch of the Open University of China (OUC), requesting to be allowed to help fight the epidemic. She is also secretary of the general Party branch, and director of the neighborhood committee of the Yunjiang Xinyuan Community, Donghai Street, Hexi District, Tianjin. For this campaign, Wang Yun brought together community staff, property-management personnel, Party members, volunteers and others to carry out investigations, publicise information, and guard community entrances and exits in order to keep residents safe.

Coordinating Forces and Implementing Strict Controls

In this crisis, Wang Yun’s team has brought people together and achieved strict control of movement in the community in three ways.

First, it has conducted irregular spot checks of residents in home quarantine. In addition to two daily phone calls, her team has entered buildings periodically to ensure that the quarantines were not being violated. Second, it has coordinated with the Yunjiang Xinyuan vegetable market and neighborhood committees to provide quarantined residents with food. Third, it has conducted in-depth and detailed investigations of residents returning to the community. Through these efforts the team has ensured thorough coverage of both work places and residential areas.

Setting an Example and Establishing Strict Controls

 Wang Yun has been hands-on in supervision, carrying out investigations, distributing information, and patrolling the community.

"Hello! We're here to take your temperature. Are you a regular resident or a tenant? Which building do you live in? Have been out of town recently? Do you have an entrance pass? Try to stay in as long as there's a risk of infection. Protect yourself well! "

Whether in snow or wind, and regardless of the cold, she has remained diligent, taking temperatures at the community gate and registering people coming or returning to Tianjin. Her strictness has helped build a firm defense against the epidemic!

Bravely Serving Residents

Wang Yun has delivered food to isolated residents numerous times, calling out to them: "I have put your vegetables at the door. Come get them shortly!" "I am taking this bag of garbage down!" "How is your temperature, and how are you feeling?" Her warmth brings solace to people forced into isolation.

Aunt Han and her husband are empty-nesters; she injured her hip in a fall last year, and is still bed-ridden, while her husband suffers from cataracts. Both have difficulty moving. Since the beginning of the epidemic, Wang Yun has brought them vegetables many times. One day, Aunt Han wanted to eat cooked food made of wheat, but no one at the Yunjiang vegetable market could supply any. Wang Yun visited several other markets, and finally, to their joy, was able to bring them some hot pancakes.

During this crisis, Wang Yun has not taken a day off. As secretary of the community, a member of the Communist Party, and a close friend of her fellow citizens, she has made it her mission to help protect their safety.
