Bridging the people and government

"Hangfeng Hotline" has been broadcast on FM 98.6 for ten years, taking calls from people wishing to appeal to the government about a problem. During the five years of cooperation between the hostess and the Shenyang Municipal Government Ombudsman, Dong Xiaohong has always insisted on impartial supervision and objective reporting, and the problems she has dealt with have included leaking roofs in the old residential area of Tiexi, poor management of parking at the Shenyang Railway Station, poor traffic-signal timing at Nanlejiao and Dongbinhe roads, and the failure of a large state-owned enterprise to reimburse women workers for their heating bills. The programme has made great contributions to social harmony and political accountability.

Aiding public welfare and helping build a harmonious Shenyang

Dong Xiaohong is also keen on charitable causes related to vulnerable groups and children living in remote areas. In 2009, she and her team donated money toward the care of a child with congenital cerebral palsy in Shenyang. These days, this child is able to walk upright. In March 2012, a student at Shenyang Institute of Engineering was diagnosed with cancer, and Xiaohong and her colleagues raised hundreds of thousands of RMB in Beijing for her treatment. In 2013, a middle-school student in Shenyang needed treatment for leukemia, and she and a reporter for Liaoshen Evening News contacted the Red Cross through the programme hotline after helping the parents apply for subsidies, and rushed to raise funds for the student.

Passionate, patient, and brave in the fight against wrongdoing

Her programme takes calls about issues such as lack of heating, clogged drains, dim street lights, unpaid salaries, dereliction of duty by officials, unjustified charges, and unreasonable extra lessons for students. She is passionate about her mandate and patient in listening to her callers; she is also unafraid to ask questions and to criticize. She adheres to the Consumer Protection Law, teaching her audience about it and helping them defend their rights.

Dong Xiaohong has firm political beliefs, is keen on public welfare, cares about disadvantaged groups, is dedicated to her post, and is ethical and professional. Her goal is to serve the people, bridge the Party and the masses, and contribute to building a harmonious and revitalised Shenyang.
