On 21 March 2023, the Open University of China (OUC) hosted a live stream in which Professor Wu Di from the AI Education Department of Huazhong Normal University discussed professional standards in the education industry.

Professor Wu, also a panel member of MOE Educational Informatization, was specifically invited to discuss the digital competence of teachers. The talk was aimed at familiarising educators across the country on the background, purpose, significance, content and requirements of the new “Teacher Digital Competence” guidelines developed by China’s Ministry of Education (MOE). The new standards aim to promote digital competence and build digital universities by implementing the guiding principles of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China. To achieve this, it is necessary to campaign for digital transformation nationwide while enhancing the awareness and ability of teachers to optimise, innovate and reform educational and teaching activities by employing digital technologies. About 91,290 teachers from the OUC system watched the live-stream.

Professor Wu discussed the “Teacher Digital Competence” guidelines by emphasising various trends in the digitalisation of education, analysing the value of digital competence for teachers, explaining the guidelines, and interpreting the assessment and practices of teacher digital competence. Professor Wu said the guidelines outline the content and guiding framework for teachers to achieve digital competence while also providing the basis for the development of resources along with monitoring and evaluation work. He added that the professional standards span five core areas: digital awareness, knowledge and skills related to digital technology, digital application, social accountability, and professional development.
