To mark World Book and Copyright Day, the Learning Resources Department (Digital Library) and the Scientific-research Management Office of the Open University of China (OUC) jointly organised a lecture on WOS on 22 April 2021.

Mr. Zhao Chong, a trainer from Clarivate Plc, was invited to explain how to use Web of Science to conduct topic selection for scientific research, and publish high-quality papers. The lecture was live-streamed on the OUC cloud classroom and OUC official bilibili live-streaming studio simultaneously.

The lecture started by covering the origin of SCI, and used examples to demonstrate how to grasp the status quo of scientific research and select topics, search and track research, acquire needed resources via Web of Science, and use EndNote to generate and manage references. Mr. Zhao also shared tips on how to choose the journals to which to send one’s contributions, and how to increase their acceptance rates. During the interactive session, he communicated in-depth with the teachers and students on their issues using Web of Science.

Web of Science is a globally-known general-retrieval platform for academic papers, and a way for researchers to access information, giving essential support to high-level scientific research, as well as the construction of disciplines by institutions. This lecture aimed to help OUC teachers and students gain a deeper understanding of the Web of Science data bank, and to enhance their future academic output.
