On 30 November 2019, at the invitation of the OUC Press Group, Academician Lu Jun of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) visited the OUC and recorded a video lecture on "Thoughts on the Development of Information Systems.”

Lu Jun is a leader in the field of Air Early Warning (AEW) information systems in China. He established the technical system for the AEW information system in China, completed the development of the first national AEW system, exported the AEW system and air-ground coordinated system, and realised the leapfrog development of AEW technology in China.

The video lecture is one of a series of courses for the project "Science and China: Expert Lectures" co-planned by the OUC and the Bureau of Academic Divisions of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CASAD). In the lecture, Lu Jun used the history of human civilisation and the history of information system development as a starting point to comprehensively and systematically establish the contents of information system technology and morphology, shedding light on the concepts of information system development. He pointed out that the highest and most complex criterion in information systems is thinking and that thinking is also a major part of the future development of information systems. Information technology has realised the collection, transmission, storage, mechanical processing, and use of information. The invention of machines that can learn and think like human beings is an important development direction.

Lu Jun praised the role and contribution of the OUC in building a society of nationwide and lifelong learning, and especially gave a high praise on the "Science and China: Expert Lectures" project. He said that the popularisation of science is as important as the innovation of science and technology. Together, the two promote the progress and development of human civilisation. "Thoughts on the Development of Information Systems" brings science closer to the public and allows the public to understand science, which plays an important role in improving national scientific literacy. Finally, he also wrote an inscription for the project, “Explore the true meaning of scientific thought to serve and benefit mankind,” expressing his hope that the OUC will launch more high-quality science courses to serve society and benefit the public.
