In 1988 Ren obtained a master's degree from New York State University and in 2001 a doctor's degree for "the discipline of computer software and theory" in the Computer Department in Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (Now Beihang University). She is now a professor in the Computer School of Beihang University.

Since 2002, Ren has been engaged in the evaluation and research of the CMM/CMMI process implementation and improvement. At present she is the CMMI lead appraiser authorized by the software engineering institute of the U.S. Carnegie-Mellon University. She has conducted in-depth research in the development of the relevant project management tools, and has completed official evaluation based on CMMI for several software enterprises.

Major projects she has led include "Research and development of process management tools based on CMMI concept", for which she got the aeronautical science foundation; "Development of multiprocessor operating system based on the extension of Petri net", for which she got the national natural science foundation; "Study on the development methods of concurrent software based on the target orientation of PETRI net", for which she got the national aeronautical science foundation and was awarded the third prize of scientific and technological progress given by the Aviation Industry Corporation of China in 1999; the project of "CAD/CAM system based on STEP"; and the study "On the development methods and support tools of concurrent software based on the target orientation of PETRI net", getting the key national lab foundation of Wuhan University.

Projects with her involvement include "Study on the development methods of concurrent software based on the target orientation of PETRI net", a third prize winner of scientific and technological achievements at the ministerial level in 1993; a key national project "Development of COSIX operating system" in the Seventh and Eighth Five-Year Plans; "MIS automatic builders of network environment", a third prize winner of scientific and technological achievements at the ministerial level in 1992; and work on the project "Deadlock detection program of ADA source" for the State Commission of Science and Technology for the National Defense Industry.
