According to 2016 China Scientific Research Papers Statistics released in Beijing by Institute of Scientific and Technical Information of China (ISTIC), the number of highly cited international papers as well as the number of papers on international hot topics from China ranks number three globally, following the United States and the U.K.

The director of ISTIC Dai Guoqiang responded that statistics have indicated that the international influence of China’s scientific research papers keeps increasing in recent years, which can be attributed in large part to China’s Innovation-Driven Development Strategy.

The statistics shows that the number of China’s highly cited papers ranking among the world's top 1% is 16,900, capturing 12.8% of the global share, and ranking at 3rd place, surpassing Germany. In the previous two years, the published papers from China have been highly cited, with 495 articles related to international hot topics, ranking in the top 0.001% of the discipline and occupying 18% of the world total, with its world rank placed at number three for the first time. In addition, the number of cited papers in eight disciplines from China ranked world number two, including agricultural science, chemistry, computer science, engineering technology, material science, mathematics, pharmacy, toxicology and physics. Papers published in the world’s most influential journals in their respective fields have been ranked as world number two for six successive years.

It is also noted that a huge increase has been seen in the output of papers by Chinese scientists participating in international grand science. For instance, the amount of internationally co-authored papers has surpassed 25% in total papers for the first time. The top six countries in co-authored papers are the United States, Australia, the U.K., Canada, Japan and Germany. In 2015 Chinese co-authored published papers, 188 articles have more than 1000 authors and over 150 participant organisations, involving the disciplines of high energy physics, astronomy and astrophysics, instruments and meters, meteorology and atmospheric science, biology and medical science, etc.
