History

The degree education in science and engineering offered by the Open University of China (OUC) started in 1979, when the Science and Engineering Teaching Department was established with teaching and research sections including Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry.

In 1985, the Department of Electrical Engineering, the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Chemical Light Industry were established following restructuring, and the Teaching and Research Section of Civil Engineering was added. In 1995, the departments and sections were combined and renamed as the Science and Engineering Teaching Division, and in 2007, as the School of Engineering. In 2014, the School was renamed as Faculty of Science and Engineering. At present, the OUC Faculty of Science and Engineering consists of three schools: the School of Computer Science and Technology, the School of Mechanical Engineering and Automation, and the School of Civil Engineering and one general office.

Over four decades of development, the OUC Faculty of Science and Engineering has provided distance education programmes at multiple levels, including junior college diploma programmes for full-time students and part-time students, open education junior college diploma programmes and undergraduate programmes, and master's degree education in Engineering. The number of all types of graduates cultivated by the Faculty has been in excess of one million. It has made great contributions to the economic construction and development in China.

Teaching Staff　

There are 21 full-time tutors working at the Faculty and two administrative staff. Among the full-time tutors, there are three professors, 12 associate professors, 15 doctorate degree holders and 8 master’s degree holders. To ensure the quality of its courses, the Faculty has invited close to a hundred senior experts and scholars from conventional universities, such as Tsinghua University and Beijing Jiaotong University to work as chief editors and course lecturers.
