Professor Sun Guohua was born in 1925 in Yangyuan, Hebei Province. After he graduated from Beiping Wenhui High School in 1946, he went to study in the Department of Law at Chaoyang College and participated in progressive students' movements. In 1949, he worked in the Department of Education at China University of Political Science and Law. In 1950, he went to study in the Department of Law in Renmin University of China as a first group of postgraduates. He was doing research on theories of the relationship between the nation and law.
He began to work at Renmin University of China after his graduation in 1952. He is a professor at the Renmin University of China Law School and a supervisor for doctoral candidates. He is also a member of the board of directors of China Law Society, and vice secretary-general of the Fundamental Legal Theory Research Association of China Law Society, part-time professor at the National Judicial Spare-time University, part-time professor at the Training Center for Senior Judges in China, part-time professor at the Central Leadership Institute of Politics and Law and Beijing Leadership Institute of Politics and Law, as well as legal adviser for the Standing Committee of Beijing Municipal People's Congress.
Professor Sun's main publications include The Function of the People's Democratic Legal System in the Socialist Construction (published by Hubei People's Press in 1955), Basic Theories of Law (published by Law Press China in 1982 and Tianjin People's Press in 1986), Fundamentals of Legal Science (published by China Renmin University Press in 1987), General Introduction to Law (published by Higher Education Press in 1989), Course for Fundamental Theories of Law, (published by China Court Press in 1991), and Understandings in the Nature and Functions of Law (published by China University of Political Science and Law Press in 1986). He also participated in the translation of The General Theory of Law (published by Liaoning People's Publishing House in 1986 and Law Press China in 1988).
Since 1985, Professor Sun has been working as a chief lecturer for the Fundamental Legal Theory course in the China Central Radio and TV University (CCRTVU, now the OUC) and also took the role as chief editor of Basic Theories of Law (published by Tianjin People's Press in 1988). In 1994, he was awarded the title of excellent chief lecturer of China radio and TV universities.
Since 1985, Professor Sun has been teaching the subject Jurisprudence and acted as a chief lecturer and chief editor of the subject Commercial Law in the CCRTVU (now OUC).
