Gao Mingxuan is a famous expert on criminal law and educator in the science of law in contemporary China. He is a pioneer of the discipline of criminal law in China as well as the inaugurator of the study of international criminal law in China.

He was born in Yuhuan County of Zhejiang Province, graduated from the Law Department of Peking University in 1951, and as a postgraduate majored in criminal law

at the Law Department of People's University of China (now Renmin University of China), completing his master's degree in 1953. He has served successively as dean of the Law Department and director of the Law School Council at Renmin University of China; he was a member of the second, third and fourth subject consultative groups and the organizer of the legal group of the State Council Academic Degrees Committee, vice president of the China Law Society and president of its Criminal Law Research Society; he is now an honorary professor and a PhD candidate supervisor at Renmin University, honorary director of the State Key Research Center of the Science of Criminal Law at Renmin University, honorary president and specially-invited consultant at the Research Institute of the Science of Criminal Law at Beijing Normal University, a part-time vice director of the Academic Board of the China Law Society, honorary president of the Criminal Law Research Association of the China Law Society, vice president of the International Association of Criminal Law and president of its China National Group, a specially-invited consultant to the Supreme People's Court, member of the Advisory Committee of Experts at the Supreme People's Procuratorate and honorary president of the Beijing Law Society.

His major works include: Gestation and Birth of Criminal Law of the People's Republic of China (published by Law Press China), Main Idea of the General Principles of Criminal Law (published by Tianjin People's Publishing House), Study on Criminal Law Issues (published by Law Press China), Criminal Law (published by Law Press China), Overview on the Study of Criminal Law in New China (published by Henan People's Publishing House), Theory and Practice of Criminal Law in New China (published by Hebei People's Publishing House), Chinese Criminal Law Science (published by China Renmin University Press), The Principles of Criminal Law (three-volume edition, published by China Renmin University Press), Newly Compiled Chinese Criminal Law (published by China Renmin University Press), and Science of Criminal Law (published by China Legal Publishing House). Science of Criminal Law (published by Law Press China in 1982) won the prize for excellent teaching material for national higher education institutions and an excellent teaching material prize awarded by the Ministry of Justice in 1988; Chinese Criminal Law Science (published by China Renmin University Press in 1989) won the special prize for excellent teaching material for the national higher education institutions in 1992; The Principles of Criminal Law (three-volume edition, published by China Renmin University Press) won the first prize in outstanding achievements of humanities and social sciences in national higher education institutions in 1995 and the second National Book Award in 1996.

Professor Gao Mingxuan served as the lead teacher for the subject of Criminal Law in the China Central Radio and TV University (CCRTVU) between 1985 and 1998. He has been always enthusiastic and keen in construction of the subject. There are over 100 hours of audio and video tapes of his teaching in the programme. He was the chief editor and author of the major teaching material Criminal Law (published by the CCRTVU Press in 1993). In 1986, Professor Gao Mingxuan was assessed as an outstanding lecturer of the Radio and TV Universities in China.
