Wang Zuofu was born in 1928 in Tangshan, Hebei province. In 1949 Professor Wang passed the entrance exams to Beijing Institute of Political Science and Law (now China University of Political Science and Law). In March 1950, Beijing Institute of Political Science and Law and North China University merged to form the People's University of China (now Renmin University of China) and Professor Wang became the first student of its undergraduate law programme. In the winter of that year, he transferred to the research institute of the same faculty, majoring in criminal law.
In February 1952, due to a need for teaching staff, Professor Wang was allocated a job as assistant of the criminal law teaching and research section prior to his graduation. He worked and studied under the first Soviet criminal law specialist to come to China. Professor Wang has held posts as lecturer, associate professor, and professor. He now holds a chair as professor at Renmin University of China Law School, supervising doctoral students and acting as a member of the School Affair Committee. He also holds the following posts: consultant to the Criminal Law Research Association of China Law Society, member of the Expert Committee to the Supreme People's Procuratorate, director of Beijing Law Society, vice-president of Beijing Criminal Law Research Association, member of the Advisory Committee to China Criminology Research Association, member of the Legal Advisory Committee to the Standing Committee of Hebei Provincial People's Congress, attorney consulting supervisor of Beijing People's Procuratorate, member of the Expert Committee to the People's Procuratorate in Haidian, Dongcheng and Xicheng districts of Beijing, director of Beijing Legal Aid Foundation, member of the Law Specialists Advisory Body to Legal Daily, visiting professor at Anhui Univeristy and Hunan Normal University, visiting professor at National Prosecutors College of P.R.C. and Beijing Administrative Cadre Institute of Politics and Law, honorary professor of Hunan Administrative Cadre Institute of Politics and Law.
Wang Zuofu's major publications include Research on China's Criminal Law (China Renmin University Press), A General Appreciation of Criminal Law (China Renmin University Press), The Application of China's Criminal Law (Chinese People's Public Security University Press), A Dictionary of Chinese Law(Criminal Law Volume) (China Procuratorate Press); Studies in Criminal Law(Law Press), The Study of China's Criminal Law (China Renmin University Press), Principles of Criminal Law (China Renmin University Press). Among these, A General Appreciation of Criminal Law won the 1985 State Education Commission first prize for outstanding teaching materials. In 1989, The Study of China's Criminal Law won the special prize in the national excellent teaching materials competition. In 1993 Principles of Criminal Law won first prize for excellent research in the humanities and social sciences at higher education institutions, and the National Book Award.
From 1986 to 1998, Professor Wang worked as a chief lecturer for China's Criminal Law at the OUC. He was also the author of the textbook the Keynote of Specific Provisions of Criminal Law (the Open University of China Press, 1989).
